Many in our community fondly remember El Borrego Mexican Restaurant, the family-owned favorite on El Cajon Boulevard known for its warmth and hospitality, beautiful patio, and signature lamb dishes. After closing at the end of 2025, the owners of El Borrego, Rodnia Attiq and her mother, Rosario Sotelo, have launched a new venture: BF Burritos.
While BF Burritos marks an exciting new chapter, its roots trace back to El Borrego’s humble beginnings. Long before opening their restaurant in 2005, the family started with a weekends-only lamb barbecue run out of a convenience store — eventually growing into the beloved gathering place many neighbors came to know and love.
Over nearly two decades, El Borrego overcame significant challenges, including the 2008 recession, the impacts of COVID-19 in 2020, and the ongoing realities of operating along busy El Cajon Boulevard, where limited parking and heavy traffic were constant hurdles. Through it all, Rodnia credits their supportive landlord and loyal customers for helping them weather every season.
In December, after thoughtful reflection, the family made the decision to close El Borrego Restaurant. The team served their final guests on December 28, closing a meaningful chapter while opening the door to something new.
Introducing BF Burritos
Rather than stepping away from the culinary world, Rodnia adapted the business into a new format through a shared commercial kitchen model. BF Burritos focuses on handcrafted breakfast burritos made especially for coffee shops and grab-and-go mornings.
The transition has meant embracing a new daily rhythm, with deliveries beginning as early as 3 a.m. and kitchen production running from 4 to 8 a.m. Their first official day in the new ghost kitchen was January 2.
BF Burritos specializes in signature 8-inch mini burritos thoughtfully made for vegans, vegetarians, and meat lovers alike. Current favorites include:
- Soyrizo & Potatoes
- Eggs, Beans & Cheese
- Potato & Eggs (Rodnia’s personal favorite)
- Beef Birria & Beans
Each burrito is paired with their roasted tomato salsa — the perfect finishing touch.
Rodnia and her team also collaborate closely with coffee shop partners, customizing menus to fit each shop’s unique vibe and clientele. You can currently find their “Brewrritos” at:
- Cuppa Cuppa (Mission Gorge)
- The Lab (Twain Street)
- Torque (El Cajon Blvd)
- Good Omen (Park Blvd, University Heights)
- Ocean Beach Coffee & Plants (Ocean Beach)
They’re also in conversation with Dark Horse Coffee and Parabola Coffee — so next time you stop in, don’t hesitate to ask for BF Burritos. Community connections make all the difference.
Catering Continues
In addition to coffee shop partnerships, BF Burritos continues the family’s catering tradition with offerings that include:
- Café de la olla carafes
- Breakfast burrito office boxes
- Full buffet menus featuring carne asada, chicken, fajitas, cochinita pibil, fresh guacamole, signature rajas con crema, and more — tailored for corporate and private events
A New Chapter for a Familiar Name
While El Borrego Restaurant has closed, its spirit lives on through BF Burritos. We’re proud to celebrate Rodnia and Rosario’s continued entrepreneurship and excited to welcome this new venture into the next chapter of our local business community.
